Properties of tungsten
In its pure form, tungsten can be a steel-grey or whitish metal. It has the highest melting point of all metals and the highest tensile strength because it reaches temperatures above 3,002 F (1,650 C). Pure tungsten has many uses and can be cut, forged, spun, drawn and extruded. However, the impure metal is brittle difficult to work with. The metal is very resistant to corrosion but does oxidize quickly when exposed to air. Natural tungsten contains five stable isotopes and 21 other unstable isotopes are recognized.
Sources of tungsten
Tungsten naturally occurs in the minerals wolframite, scheelite, huebnertie and ferberite. China may have about 75 percent of the world's tungsten resources and other deposits are located in California, Colorado, South Korea, Bolivia, Russia and Portugal. The metal is typically obtained by reducing tungsten oxide with hydrogen or carbon.
