The surfaces of sodium tungsten bronze crystals have been examined by using cyclic voltammetry and Auger electron spectroscopy before and after electrochemical treatments. Compositional depth profiles of the sodium depletion layers were obtained and the formation of hydrogen tungsten bronze was observed and studied. Hydrogen tungsten bronze was found to form on the anodized cubic sodium tungsten bronze at two separate potentials, corresponding to the formation of semiconducting and metallic phases of HxWO3.
